London (KurdishMedia.com) 24 December 2003: The Kurdish artist Ferhat Tunc has been sentenced to three months in prison for a speech he made on the 4th of August in a concert in Aydin, Turkey.

The artist was sentenced by a court in Aydin for breaching an article of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK).

It has been reported that Tunc is preparing to take this case to the European Court of Human Rights. Tunc was quoted in the Turkish media as saying that he saw this as a reaction to the democracy movement in Turkey.

Tunc was quoted as saying, "This temporary peace atmosphere that has emerged in Turkey is being sabotaged and I am trying to do my bit as an intellectual."

Tunc also stated, "There is a mentality in Turkey that does not want to change and this mentality is trying to alienate those who struggle for this right cause through conspiracies and lynching."

Tuncs also added that the reforms in relation to human rights in Turkey were not satisfactory and that especially regarding the Kurdish question there was an irresponsible attitude and uncertainty.
