Open letter: Turkey does not have the right to interfere in Kurdistani affairs - updated

To the secretary General of the UN

To the President of the USA

To all the Kurdistani political parties

To the European parliament

To the public opinion

Dear Sirs,

Ref: Turkish intervention

We are deeply concerned and outraged about the current Turkish interference in Kurdistani affairs.

The Kurdistani nation is already under pressure from the Iraqi regime. There have been speculations that Iraq may use weapons of mass destruction against Kurds, even before the US attacks on Iraq starts. Adding to this pressure, in the last few days, the Turkish regime has put the Kurdistani nation under even more pressure through threatening and intervening in its internal affairs.

Recently, the Turkish Defence Minister claimed that the Kurdistani cities of Musul and Kirkuk are Turkish. The Turkish media and officials have been working extremely hard to undermine the democracy in South Kurdistan and pump hatred into the Kurdistani society.

The world should support Kurdistan’s democratic credentials and achievements. After forcing the totalitarian regime of Iraq out in 1991, the Kurdistanis have established a democracy through the first free general elections ever conducted in the region. However, its democracy is fragile, not because of the Kurdistanis, but due to regional powers’ destabilising interference in its affairs and lack of a Western policy for the region.

Turkey fears a real democracy in the region, which will undermine and highlight its totalitarian and oppressive rule.

Today, although it has not been formally recognised by the UN, South Kurdistan is the only democratic regime in the region.

Kurdistan is a democracy that the world, and especially the region, needs. The international community needs to protect and support south Kurdistan’s democracy. It would be to support the only democratic government in a non-democratic region. If the West wishes to establish bridges with the Middle East, Kurdistan is the only peaceful regime that it can trust.

We ask the international community to protect and support this young democracy in order for it to flourish and spread into other countries in the region. Let us all together strongly condemn Turkey and say in one voice:

- Turkey has no right to interfere in Kurdistani affairs

- Turkey has no right to threaten any Kurdish political party or any Kurdish leader

- Turkish officials must not make any statements that undermine the security of Kurdistan

- Kurdistanis have every right for self-determination if they wish to exercise it

- Turkey must not take part in the negotiations between the West and the Kurds on the future of the region
