London (KurdishMedia.com) 09 October 2008: A group of cedars declared a new socio-political current to reform the PUK. It is called Movement for Democratic Change or RAG, for short.
A group of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) gathered in London on Tuesday to declare a new socio-political movement that works within the PUK. Four PUK prominent and high profile advocates of the PUK organsied a meeting in London to declare the foundation of their socio-political movement to reform the PUK and “rescue it from the current corrupt leadership”. It is called Movement for Democratic Change or RAG, for short. They were Shorish Haji, Mala Khidir Mamend, Haval Kustani and Hishyar Abid.
The meeting was opened with a welcome by Hishyar Abid and then Shorish Haji discussed the ideas and concepts behind establishing their movement, RAG. Haji made it clear that they are not a new organisation, rather a new socio-political current within the PUK and their objective is to return decency to the PUK. Haji declared that the current PUK leadership is corrupt and must resign. After the remarks, the floor was opened for discussion.
Prominent and high profile members of the Kurdish community in the UK were invited to the meeting. Most of the participants supported the movement; albeit it did not escape criticism and evaluation form the participants.
It was believed that this is a courage step and it was well overdue. Some believed that they should cut their links with the PUK and established a fresh organisation. Others, however, perceived the problem with the PUK is the corrupt leadership, and on top of it, the leader of the PUK and his family. It is believed that they have to participate with other similar organisation and movements.
In responding to the evolutions, the organisers stated that they are not yet another wing of the PUK; neither they are another PUK. Rather they regard themselves as the voice of the ordinary members of the PUK and their middle cadres.
